Armwrestler Matthias Schlitte Reaches for a Ticket to the Arnold Classics

The Bebertal native aims to qualify in Poland for Schwarzenegger’s armwrestling event

While many vacationers are enjoying the holiday spirit along Poland’s Baltic Sea coast, Matthias Schlitte from the Börde district is facing a tough athletic challenge. On the Hel Peninsula, the 13-time German Champion will compete this coming weekend at the Hel International Armwrestling Tournament – and it’s about more than just medals: Schlitte is aiming to secure his ticket to the 2026 Arnold Classics in Columbus, Ohio.

The tournament is one of the few official European qualifiers for the multi-sport festival founded by action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger. Every year, the world’s best athletes in various disciplines compete in the U.S. – from bodybuilding and powerlifting to professional armwrestling.

For Matthias “Hellboy” Schlitte, who already won bronze at the 2025 Arnold Classics in Ohio, the motivation is high:

“I’ve got a taste for it. The stage in Columbus is one of a kind – I want to experience that again!”

But before that can happen, the man from Börde must face a tough field in Poland. Over 100 athletes from 10 nations are expected to compete – including many international stars. For Schlitte, the main focus is on hitting the 70-kilogram weight limit to qualify for his intended class.

“I’ve tailored my training and nutrition entirely to this weight class. The goal is clear: secure the qualification!”

Schlitte has proven many times that he can handle high-pressure situations. Most recently, at his big appearance in Ohio, he showed mental toughness by battling through seven intense matches to reach the podium – taking bronze at one of the world’s most prestigious tournaments. A performance that earned him recognition both nationally and internationally.

Now the next chapter is about to begin. At this new edition on the Baltic Sea, the Bebertal athlete wants not only to claim another title – but above all to secure another chance to compete at America’s biggest sports event. If successful, the grand stage awaits again in spring 2026 – with another clash of titans, and perhaps even a personal meeting with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“It’s going to be tough, but I’m ready. I’m giving it everything I’ve got to qualify for Columbus once again – that’s my big goal!” said Schlitte with determination.
