Many people’s first association with Armwrestling is a beer-soaked bar-table and drunken sailors – which is completely wrong. The sport Armwrestling actually shows a lot of differences to the well-known bar adventures. The most essential differences are the higher speed and the used technicques. Contestants fight standing at a table of 1.04 meter height, which offers a much more dynamic fight. The contestants free hands are clenched around a handle. The elbows are put onto round pads.
With the hands in the middle of the table both contestant’s wrists have to be straight, also the shoulders have to be parallel to the table. A referree arranges the position of each fighter and after his starting signal “ready … go!” each contestant tries to puth the wrist of his opponent onto another pad. Each rule breach is counted as a “foul”, after two fouls of a contestant the fight is counted as “lost”. Classic fouls are early start, intentional letting loose of the opponent’s hand or lifting the elbow from the pad.
Professional tournaments are fought out in different weight-classes in the so-called “Double Elimination”-system, which means that a contestant is only resigned after losing two fights. The sport found its way to Europe from America in 1985, after the movie “Over the Top” with Silvester Stallone became popular. For the shooting of this movie many armwrestlers were wanted for the first World Championships in Las Vegas. In other nations tournaments were organized in cooperation with the AAA (American Association of Armwrestling), which already were used as a qualification for the World Championships. The first German tournament took place in Munich. In 1988 the “Deutsche Armwrestling Verband” was founded and the first German Championshipts were battled. From this point on German athletes always were part of the international Armwrestling scene. Also the German Armwrestling tournament “Over the Top”, which is battled out each year in Wolfsburg, became a major event for European and international Armwrestlers. Since 2008 there also exists a National League called “Armwrestling Bundesliga”, where the different Armwrestling clubs battle out their champions.
